Thank you everyone for being so patient. In an ideal world, you would have been able to access these results at the regatta, but due to internet issues that we could not resolve they are only available now.

Indoor Rowing Champs Results

FOUR RECORDS BROKEN

See here for the results of the tremendous effort displayed by all our BSRA schoolgirls’. Thank you everyone for such spirit in your competition.

Lourdes Hill and the CityCat

The BSRA is once again partnering with Transdev to provide CityCat interactions for our rowers, coaches and coxswains. This interaction highlights the specific elements that rowing and commercial vessels need to consider on waterways to operate harmoniously and safely.

The Lourdes Hill College girls were terrific ambassadors for their school: they were good listeners, had some great questions and were polite as welcomed guests on the CityCat.

All Hallows’ new safety device

Don’t these look fancy? They are the new All Hallows’ school safety device for rowers. The pink is a bright colour for challenging light conditions along with reflector stripes that also has thermal detection from the CityCat instruments. Fancy and SMART!

BSRA at Wyralong for the 2017 Regatta Season

The BSRA competition in 2017 is relocating from Kawana on the Sunshine Coast to Wyaralong Dam near Beaudesert.

There are two headlands: one that accommodates the rowers and the existing headland (evidenced in the photo) that will accommodate all the supporters.

Supporting maps are available on the WYARALONG page here on the website.

Cliff Slawson Memorial

Toowong Rowing Club 3pm 3rd June 2016. Come and share your stories and pay your respects to a man and his family that contributed so much to our community.

In a nutshell, Cliff had finished treatment for his primary cancer late last year only to discover around Christmas time that it had spread to his brain. Surgery and further Chemo had looked promising with no sign of recurrence as late as April this year. A scan at the beginning of May revealed an aggressive regrowth of the tumour and further tumours around the brain. Further treatment wasn’t possible and the aggressive nature of the tumours meant his decline was swift.

There will not be a funeral, however, there will be a celebration of his life at Toowong Rowing Club this Friday afternoon. Please see the attached invitation. Invitation is extended to all that knew him, so please feel free to extend this invitation to the BSRA delegates.

BSRA and CityCat interaction 2016

The BSRA and Transdev have coordinated an interaction between rowers/coaches and CityCat Masters, to educate on the safety issues that implicate all river craft. In particular, the communication centred around visibility issues, river rules and how each craft can enhance their experience,  while limiting the impact on the other, and still maintaining a great relationship of shared respect.

Lourdes Hill College were the first scheduled with Robert Clark from Transdev. Robert took them from Hawthorne to QUT on the 5:48am journey. The point of this timing was for the rowers and coaches to appreciate the changing light conditions from the CityCat Master perspective. The 40 tonnes of the CityCat and 500 metres to stop against 350 kilos in a Quad (including rowers) and approx 15 metres to stop was an alarming statistic to process and consider. But when the river rules are followed everyone is safe.

The lessons learnt included:

  1. ensuring there are compliant lights on boats
  2. wearing highly visible clothing
  3. staying on the correct river “third”
  4. not entering the exclusion zone when a CityCat is occupying the terminal space
  5. moving quickly through an exclusion zone

LHC CityCat

Feedback from a parent that came along in a supervisory role:

Dear Rachael, Robert and Kathy

Thank you for this morning’s expo with the rowing LHC girls and the chance to ride along as an observer. As we discussed, it’s great to see such active risk management in practice. The leadership by the BRSA and Transdev in this space is impressive to observe – on the surface, a trip up and down the river the girls use most days seems simple, but the fact it was so well executed with relevant communication, demonstration and scenario modelling, made it into an example worth sharing widely.

As an interested parent, I found it most valuable and intend to keep sharing the message amongst the other rowing folks I interact with and certainly from a work perspective we are always looking for examples of active safety leadership instead of only using lessons learned from things that went wrong.

I congratulate  BRSA and Transdev on this initiative and hope others gain much from the experience.
